There is a paradigm shift in education. Education has become student centric from being teacher-centric. All institutions of higher education have come to recognize that knowledge should be freely available to learners living in any corner of the world. A professorís dream is to reach an audience of several hundred thousand students!
COURSERA, an educational initiative by professors from Stanford University, Princeton University and University of Michigan offers 198 courses online free of cost. There are more than 33 participating Universities. All the students have to do is register themselves online. Materials are webcast and taught through the internet every week. Students are expected to listen to video lectures with interactive quizzes and answer review questions and submit the assignments. Students can learn at their own pace. There are collaborative classrooms across the globe to clarify and brainstorm. Auto graded exercises are given and the students get instant feedback. At the completion of the course (approx. six weeks duration) a Letter of Accomplishment is sent to the student through e-mail signed by the professor conducting the course.
The advantage of this initiative is that anyone interested in a particular subject can learn it free of cost. The only thing required from the student is access to Internet connection.
The courses offered vary from Greek Mythology to Advanced Algorithms to Web Design to Healthcare and Medicine.
Choose whichever subject interests you and have fun learning it!
