Manthan’s Student Editor Gayathri Keerthana conducted a telephonic interview with Madurai District Collector Anshul Mishra.  He is presently appointed as the Joint Commissioner, Commercial taxes. Mr. Mishra is not new to Coimbatoreans as he was holding the office of Commissioner from 2007 to 2010.

He graduated from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and passed the UPSC examination in the year 2004, securing the 41st rank. In this interview he shares the challenges of the Civil Service Profession and his aspirations for the youth of our country.

Collector Anshul Mishra: Though we may consider qualifying for Civil Services as the toughest task, literally the real hard work starts afterwards. One has to deliver services to the people, take initiatives to satisfy the needs of the poor and the needy.  This profession calls for real ‘SERVICE’ and it is not a mere job! This service is not for the faint-hearted.

Student Editor: What message would you like to pass on to politicians/people to make our country a better place?

Collector Anshul Mishra: First of all, every citizen should know his responsibilities and not only demand his rights. As we have fewer resources but more people to share, there is likelihood of chaos and disorder if everybody demands his rights to be fulfilled unconditionally. For this we need to plan and prioritize as to who should be given priority such as children, destitute women, who are the real needy ones. People elect politicians and we work under them. Politicians should be strong enough to take tough decisions which may be unpopular but will benefit the country in the long term.

Student Editor: How were your college days and preparation for civil services exams?
