    The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of the University which began its journey in 1958-59 with the inauguration of the under-graduate programme. The Department has since then made significant growth and progress largely due to innovative programmes and the setting up of such goals that lead to high quality expansion of departmental activities. Through different programmes and activities, the Department has been making constant efforts to raise academic, intellectual and scholastic standards. Currently the Department offers B.A. in Economics, Post-graduation in Economics, M.Phil in Economics and Ph.D (Economics).
    The core strength of the Department is the quality of faculty who is competent, qualified and trained in modern teaching and research methods. The Department is actively engaged in research and developmental activities that have resulted in the publication of a large number of books and research papers in different fields of Economics. Several faculty members are involved in research projects and are members of distinguished professional bodies. Many students have published their research work in various reputed journals, qualified in NET and SLET examinations, and have been awarded the Fellowships. The Department has been frequently organizing seminars, conferences, workshops and invited talks by academicians and eminent personalities. The fast changing economic scenario poses to the department a challenge of continuously updating its curriculum and faculty, which have been made regularly by the department.


    To provide quality education, while equipping students with knowledge and skills in their chosen stream, inculcate values, identify hidden talents, provide opportunities for students to realize their full potential and thus shape them into future leaders, entrepreneurs and above all good human beings. By enhancing quality, innovation and intellectual distinctiveness the department will elevate itself as a leading school for social science. We will strengthen our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and take relevant action for the betterment of the students and equip the students to meet the challenges of the future.


    The primary mission of the economics program is to offer educational opportunities to students in order to prepare them to become accomplished citizens and professionals capable of critical thinking and independent analysis. Our mission is to provide benefits to the student community drawing upon the intellectual resources of the department which make a direct contribution to enhance the academic standards.

    The Department is ICT enabled with Wi-fi connectivity, two class rooms with LCD projector for facilitating teaching-learning process and software like SPSS and eViews to train and teach undergraduate and postgraduate students advanced statistical and Econometric tools.
