    The Department of Tamil was started in 1957. At the outset it offered only Part I Tamil at the under-graduate level. Branch XII Tamil Literature was started in 1967 as single major. In 1978 when the triple major system was introduced Tamil Literature was one of the three majors. When the college was conferred the Deemed University status Tamil Literature was offered along with Economics, Music (Tamil & Economics, Tamil & Music) under the double major system. The Department started the P.G. programme in Development - Language & Literature in 1990 and M. Phil programme in 1995. The department is also recognized for Ph.D. programme

  • Research Programmes

    Staff members in the department are in active research such as guiding research scholars,publishing research articles periodically.

    The members are encouraged to attend and present papers in seminars and conferences organized by others universities and forums - helps students to select topics for dissertation at P.G. level and also for M.Phil. The major thrust areas within the subject in research activities being actively persuade are Women's issues, Women in Tamil Literature, Fine arts in Literature, Folk Literature, Journalism, Religion & Philosophy, Mass Media.

    Students are permitted to other libraries of other universities for reference work for their research.

    The department conducts special meetings and invites resource persons and both the teachers and students are benefited.

    Papers and syllabus are framed in such a way that they cater to the objectives of the research work which will be done by the students.
