Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women is the dream-child of Dr. T. S. Avinashilingam, illustrious educationist and veteran freedom fighter from the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. This eminent Gandhian envisaged an institute of higher education to uplift and empower women, especially those belonging to the deprived sections of the society, and to prepare them for meaningful service to their homes, community and the nation.
The Department of Adult, Continuing Education, Extension and Field Outreach of Avinashilingam University for women established in the month of August 2005 and has been undertaking a notable programmes under its five dimensions :
The Department took the initiative in planning and implementing various activities in focus of PURA (Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas) - Our former president Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam's dream.
The main aim of the department is to promote meaningful and sustainable rapport between the universities and the community. It extends the knowledge and other institutional resources to educationally un-reached person through the university system.
It is well known that the impact of globalization has placed new demands on the education system. Transformation with rapid change is taking place everywhere. The student and youth have to be prepared by the university to adopt change and learn new skills in accordance with the new demands of the work force. The universities also have to open door to adult learners for life long learning programmes.
Training on entrepreneurial activity to unemployed adult is one of the dynamic and pragmatic approach for the development of human resources and the only solution for the unemployment problem. Effective skill training programmes are key to rural development and are a result of active community involvement and ownership of the processes, along with access to appropriate resources for training. The income generating programmes should aim to bring the participants together and empower them to help themselves, and it should provide training, equip them with marketable skills and thereby improving the participant's financial independence and reducing family poverty.
In this scenario, there is a burning need for a quality oriented education courses that should reach the needed population especially the educationally un-reached population. The Continuing Education programmes were carried out on the basis of the following thrust areas identified.

At present long duration (One month- Six months) certificate courses were also offered by the department.
SHORT TERM COURSES
Short term courses (2 days - 15 days) were facilitated to enrich the skills of the women in multiple fields and skilled population was created through these need based courses.
SELF SUPPORTING COURSES
The entire programmes concentrated on the needs of women irrespective of their age and offered in flexible timings, which suited for the target groups. Each training programmes utilized the most cutting edge techniques to enhance the learning process and developed the highest skill levels with each participants.

Keeping this in view, from the establishment, the department is actively playing as a multifunctional and multidimensional center in providing a variety of learning programmes to the beneficiaries.
Students, non-student youth, SHG men and women, homemakers, VRS persons, physically challenged, entrepreneurs, unskilled / semiskilled persons, adolescents, SC/ST, deprived groups, employed / unemployed groups, neoliterates, school dropouts and senior citizens.
The main focus is to promote various long term and short-term need-based income generating courses to non -student youth, unemployed youth, voluntary retried persons and marginalized communities, particularly women and men from deprived groups. These training programmes were designed such that it should provide necessary skills in diversified fields to meet the needs of a changing socio-economic context and broaden the employment opportunities as well as self - employment opportunities of the participants.
In addition the department has well equipped computer lab, foods lab, apparel designing unit and beauty therapy unit to build qualitative practical skills. The offered courses were designed by subject experts and offered maximum laboratory work with required theory. Industrial visit was made compulsory for the relevant courses. At the completion of the course, the trainees were developed professional portfolio needed to take up career in their field.
From the inception, the department had been offering very specialized awareness programmes on real issues that people were confronted with and especially targeted at the deprived communities. Theses programmes particularly facilitated the quality of the life in the areas such as health and nutrition, environmental health, micro enterprises, agriculture and legal rights.
