    The Department of Economics is one of the oldest and main constituent departments of the Avinashilingam Institute established in 1958-59 and turned postgraduate in 1975-76. It offers courses B.A Economics, M.A Economics, M.Phil Economics and PhD Economics. Since its inception, the department has been committed towards promoting high quality teaching which combines rigour with relevance, giving the student a thorough grounding in economic theory, empirical techniques and contemporary policy issues. Students get exposure to a wide range of courses and also gain experience in doing field work, analyzing data, handling statistical software packages, making presentations and writing reports and papers. The rigor and flexibility of our programs not only prepare students to embark on challenging careers upon graduation, but to pursue advanced degrees in their areas of interests. All faculty members in the Department are well-respected authors and scholars, and all are active in teaching, research and professional service. The Department of Economics is the hub of a number of academic and co-curricular activities and has organized numerous academic conferences and workshops aimed at encouraging the students to explore beyond the frontiers of the prescribed syllabus, evaluate economic issues using the skills and tools acquired both inside and outside the classroom, and interact with experts from diverse areas of specialization.
