  • Department profile

Of all life on earth, plants are the only producers. All consumers, particularly man are dependent upon plants for food, fiber, wood, energy and oxygen. Knowledge of the plants their habitats, structure, metabolism and inheritance is thus the basic foundation for man's survival.

The society of plants, Botany which is not new science, grew along with related sciences such as Taxonomy, Plantpathology, Phytochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry,Genetics and Plant Breeding, Ecology and Microbiology. The rise and development of other branches of sciences is closely linked with the progress of Botany.

The department is undertaking research projects in the area of organic farming, reproductive biology, plant tissue culture, seed technology, plant physiology, microbiology, molecular biology, algology and medicinal plant biology. So far the department has produced 19 Ph.D. scholars, 37 M.Phil scholars and 159 M.Sc. students.

GENESIS AND GROWTH OF THE DEPARTMENT

    OBJECTIVES

    • Provided opportunities for all round development of the students and excellence in higher education ,research and extension and different disciplines.
    • To acquaint students with all the fields of modern Botany and with the great diversity of plant life that inhabits our biosphere.
    • To study about the importance of plants and plant products.
    • To impart the knowledge of pharmacognosy and to provide an upto date study of microorganisms and their role in human life.
    • To emphasize the studies regarding how natural system respond to stress and pollution.
    • To study about the micro propagation of plants especially endangered species for conservation of flora through rapid multiplication.
    • Disseminate of the findings research to the community to facilitate its development.
    • To focus the attention of scientists on crop improvement and biodiversity which are the foremost aim of our country.
