Renowned Gandhian Dr. T.S. Avinashilingam called as “Ayya”, started the Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore. He had dedicated his entire life, following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi. As a disciple of the apostle of peace, Ayya was one among the great leaders to be inspired by Gandhiji’s inspiring human values, awakening a new consciousness with the desire for the liberation of mankind.

Ayya wanted his institution to work on the basis of Gandhian Philosophy. Thus the buds of Gandhian thoughts are blossoming in different parts of the world. Our institution upholds a life of purity, discipline and service to less privileged community. Hence every discipline integrates value orientation as its component at different levels of the teaching and learning situation. Our institution keeps foremost the need to preserve the best in the traditional culture of India, cherish ethical, social and spiritual values and foster the spirit of national integration and patriotism. The institution follows the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda and Sri Saradamani Devi.

Gandhian principles are more relevant today than ever before. Centre for studies on Mahatma can go a long way in making education more meaningful and purposeful. The Gandhian Studies Centre at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women was established under the Scheme of Epoch Making Social Thinkers of India during X plan period from 01.09.2005.
