Dr. S.Kowsalya M.Sc., M.Phil, Ph.D

Dr.S.Kowsalya had assumed charge as Registrar from 9th Nov, 2016, of Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women. She entered academia in 1991 as Lecturer and emerged as the Professor (CAS) in 2009 in the Department of Foods Science and Nutrition (FSN). She completed her Ph.D in Food Science and Nutrition during 2002. She is a gold medalist at UG and PG programmes and received ICAR Junior Fellowship for PG Programme. Her areas of expertise are Nutritional biochemistry, Micronutrient availability, Community Nutrition, Nutraceuticals, Nutrigenomics and Nanotechnology. She has been actively involved as PI/ CO-PI in research projects sponsored by Govt. of India. Agencies like UGC, MNCES, DST, Dept. of Social Welfare and other agencies like Institute of Applied Project and Heinz India Pvt. Ltd. worth of more than 85 Lakhs. Further, as PI produced courseware (605 e Lessons) for PG Students in FSN by UGC,NMICT for Rs.1.05Crores. She Mentored more than 60 M.Sc. Projects, 22 M.Phil. thesis, guided 9 and guiding 8 Ph.D Scholars. She has 3 patents published on “Micronutrient Rich Biscuit Sports Nutribar and probiotic complementary food”. She has published 86 research papers in National and International Journals, 13 books/ booklets. Currently she is the Joint Secretary at National level in Nutrition Society of India, Technical Advisory Committee(TAC) member in NFHS-6 and Technical Expert Group Member in National Programme on Climate Change & Human Health(NPCCHH), GoI. She has received around 15 Awards for Teaching and Research. Best Teacher Award by CII, Tamil Nadu Scientist Award (TANSA) in Social Sciences received from Hon’ble CM of Tamil Nadu on Dec. 2018 and received 10th Dr. Rajammal P.Devadas Memorial Award at 51st Annual National Conference of NSI , on 9th Nov. 2019 . She also received P.K.D as Memorial Award (Life Sciences) in Education from Nehru Group of Institutions on 11.12.2019. Acted as Core Committee Expert of UGC Learning Outcome Based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) for Home Science in 2020. She is the Consortium PI for DST Grant Challenge Programme on Biomedical Devices for Anaemia in 2021 (Sanctioned for Rs.5.85Crores) and PI for the Project of Dissemination of the Grassroots Innovations for the upliftment of Farm Women and Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Coimbatore District in November 2022 (Rs.11,69,608/-). Received the ‘Best University Award’ for Education and Research on Millets during ‘National Convention’ September 2022 from Agricultural Minister, Telangana at Hyderabad(Organized by ICAR-IIMR). Received ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in Millet Research and Development at the International Nutri Cereal Convention (INCC) 5.0 by ICAR – Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad on 27th November, 2023. She has visited Sweden, Canada, South Korea, Tanzania and Mangolia for academic, research collaborations and administrative purposes.
