Department Of Textiles and Clothing

The Department of Textiles and Clothing was established in the year 1967 with the purpose of providing world class education in the field of Textiles. The department has industrial and academic collaborations and this has positioned the department as the highest stride of progressive changes and innovations along with imparting discipline, creativity and tradition. The course has been designed to focus on textile fibre, yarn, fabric, quality control and testing with knowledge on wet processing of textiles including the dyeing and printing. Need based courses to enhance the creative entrepreneurial skills among students is part of the curriculum focusing the holistic development of the learners. Advances in the field including the application of computers in fashion and garment industry, marketing, merchandising and entrepreneurship development, eco-friendly textile production, technical textiles are given limelight in the syllabus.

The department has 16 faculty members consisting of 2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors (SG), 3 Temporary Assistant Professors and 6 Temporary Teaching Research Fellows  who strive to give excellence in Teaching and Research. The on and off campus placements are very good and students are mostly employed as Assistant Professors, Research Associates, Fashion and Celebrity designers, Entrepreneurs, Boutique heads, Fashion illustrators and Designers, Jewellery Designers, Quality Control managers and supervisors, Store in-charge for international fashion brands and Visual Merchandisers

Highlights of the Department
  • University Grants Commission sponsored a major project under SAP-DRS : Exploring Under Utilized Bio- Resources for Eco and Technical Textiles.
  • Advanced Latest equipments like Nano Spray Dryer, Spectrophotometer with Colourlab to enable students to work on the state of the art technologies.
  • Experienced faculty members who have completed their doctoral degree with NET/SLET help the students to achieve their dreams in the areas of fashion, textiles and clothing
  • The department is well equipped with various laboratories namely Textile Testing, Textile Dyeing and Printing, Advanced Textile Production lab, Garment Construction lab - Basic and Advanced and Interdisciplinary Research lab (Bio-Textiles)
  • The department has signed MoU with academic institutions that facilitate the students to carry out research and develop professional skills
  • The alumni of the department are placed in various top institutions both in academic arena and industries as professors and designers, quality control personal, merchandiser, illustrators respectively and also as successful entrepreneurs across the country and globally.

Programme Specific Outcomes(PSO)

Undergraduate programme
  • Relate inspired themes to develop sketches, styles, patterns, silhouettes and accessories through critical thinking in relation to fashion concepts.
  • Develop problem solving abilities in the areas of fashion designing, fashion theories, fashion marketing, merchandising, textile testing, textile processing and quality control.
  • Apply knowledge to introduce sustainable practices in textile, fashion forecasting and apparel industry
Postgraduate programme
  • Gain expertise in heritage textiles, Costumes, fashion designing, accessory designing, advanced textile production and processing
  • Obtain experience in fashion portfolio, garment making, textile fabrication techniques, textile testing, textile management and quality control methods.
  • Undertake various need based and multidisciplinary eco-friendly researches, economic management and marketing techniques.
