IHEC

Introduction

Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women (AIHSHE), a Deemed-to-be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, offers inclusive education and all round development of women students of all walks of life with focus on community oriented learning through formal and non-formal education and outreach activities, research, consultancy and technology transfer and ethics and value-based education. The institution’s research approach supports the broader goal of Atma-Nirbhar Bharat by integrating research and innovation to address societal challenges.
The Institutional Human Ethics Committee (IHEC) of Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women plays the fundamental role of guiding researchers in the ethical issues associated with their research. The IHEC reviews biomedical and health research, academic research and student research involving human participants conducted in our institution covering projects funded or unfunded, industry-sponsored or investigator-initiated to ensure that ethical standards are upheld for protection of dignity, rights, safety, and well-being of participants from submission through completion of the study and archival of
research outcome.

Objectives

The prime objective of the IHEC is to ensure that the core ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, respect for persons, privacy, confidentiality and equity are adhered to by the researchers of any research study involving human participants

The primary purpose of the IHEC is to:
  • Safeguard the dignity, rights, safety, and well-being of human participants involved in research
  • Ensure scientific and ethical integrity of research conducted within the institution
  • Ensure compliance with national and international ethical guidelines, such as:

ICMR National Ethical Guidelines (India) 2017
        ICH-GCP (Good Clinical Practice)
New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules (2019, India)

IHEC Functions
  • Review and approve research proposals involving human subjects
  • Evaluate informed consent documents, recruitment procedures, and data confidentiality measures.
  • Classify proposals for full-board review, expedited review, or exemption.
  • Monitor ongoing approved research through progress reports, site visits, and adverse event reporting.
  • Recommend actions in cases of non-compliance or ethical violations.
  • Provide guidance and training to researchers on ethical practices.

The major responsibility of IHEC is to protect the rights, safety and well-being of the participants in the research study. The IHEC conducts regular meetings for  reviewing the research proposals and gives suggestions to the investigators to make
the research ethical before approving them. All research projects on humans should get the approval of the ethics committee before starting their study.

IHEC review and approval are mandatory before initiating:
  • Biomedical and clinical research
  • Epidemiological and behavioral studies involving human data
  • Use of biological samples or medical records
  • Student dissertations and projects involving human participants
