The department of Civil Engineering was established in 2012 and offers B.E in Civil Engineering with Computer Application and also Ph.D. programme. The department is actively involved in research activities in the field of Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Green Buildings, Energy and Environmental Engineering. The department has a CSIR sponsored Research Lab catering to the needs of research and undergraduate students. Faculty has also filed Patent for their innovative work.

Thiru T.S. Dhandapani Chettiar Chair in the field of Social Sciences was instituted with a sum of Rs.10,00,000 on 03/01/2018 to undertake higher studies, and research and to conduct outreach programmes for empowering women through entrepreneurship development. The Chair will focus on training/imparting necessary skills for decision making, domestic and entrepreneurial management ventures of women. The Chair will act as a pivotal point for co-coordinating activities such as workshops, seminars, training programmes, and similar activities for the empowerment of women entrepreneurs.

Dr. Rajammal P. Devadas Chair in the field of Nutrition Sciences was instituted with a sum of Rs.15,00,000 on 03/01/2018 to undertake higher studies, and research and to conduct outreach programmes for empowering women in the field of Food Science and Nutrition. The Chair will focus on instilling the spirit of scientific research and empathy for fellow human beings among the students and budding researchers and will act as the fulcrum for co-coordinating activities such as workshops, seminars, training programmes, conferences and webinars for enlightening nutrition scientists.

Preamble
Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women – Deemed University, situated in the heart of Coimbatore city, is an institution exclusively for women offering education in an atmosphere reverberating with the ideals of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Saradamanai Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. The institution fondly known as Saradalaya is well known for upholding spiritual and educational values and translates its vision into quality teaching, innovative research and appropriate application of knowledge through extension, outreach and consultancy efforts.
Dr.T.S.Avinashilingam Chair has been set up in this institute to enhance focuson theefforts taken towards Empowerment of Women with specific spearheaded ventures in Inclusive Education through research and training. Dr.T.S.Avinashilingam, fondly called as Ayya Avargal, lived a life dedicated to the cause of education, national development and empowerment of women and disadvantaged sections of society. The ideals of Ayya avargal is the guiding mantra behind the multiple undertakings of the institution in knowledge, research, training and extension activities.As a freedom fighter, educationist, social worker, philanthropist and the former Minister of Education of the composite Madras State, Ayya Avl. has left an indelible imprint through his immense contribution towards education that has enabled many to reach multiple milestones of success in their lives.
Therefore setting up of Dr. T.S.Avinashilingam CHAIR in this institute in his memory is a befitting tribute to this illustrious visionary, the guiding light of all our endeavours. In this regard, a sum of Rs.15,00,000/- has been sanctioned to undertake higher studies, research and to conduct outreach programmes in the disciplines specific to the empowerment of women and inclusive education. The CHAIR initiates essential measures to translate the educational ideals of Dr.T.S.Avinashilingam Ayya Avargal into practical realisation for social transformation. The objectives of the Chair are accomplished by organising academic forums such as seminars, workshops, lectures and similar activities. The members in the Chair convene meetings every quarter to plan and implement programmes for women emancipation and inclusive society.

Ayya Digital Museum
This digital museum is an initiative to preserve the existing tradition, life history, values, practices, writings, and documents of Ayya Avargal in a digital form. This museum will be made available on our university website which can be viewed by anybody in the world. It will help our students to view revered Ayya Dr. T.S. Avinashilingam'svision and contribution to society. The virtual museum provides the viewer with an enthralling experience with videos, scanned documents of his writings, photographs scanned images, and audio of his speeches.
Tracing the life of the legendary who has lived a life of sacrifice, it is planned that the important episodes of his life be included as follows :

VBE has now been made an integral part of the New Education Policy 2020. The 5 universal values specifically mentioned in NEP 2020, are “Truth, Peace, Non-violence, Love, Righteous conduct”. Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore has instituted “SJS (Swami Jagadatmananda Saraswati) CENTRE FOR VALUE BASED EDUCATION CHAIR” in collaboration with Lalithambigai Trust, Coimbatore. MoU was signed on 19.04.2021.
